Vintage Camel Scarf
This is the camel yarn that came back from Italy with me last year. It’s still one of the softest yarns i’ve ever petted - only bettered by my pink socks after they were washed. <3<3<3
Anyways - look! Acorns! Or lookalike weaving!
And obviously at the end of a long winter, just as it starts to heat up, it makes total sense to start knitting a scarf!
No? Well I have 5 balls of this yarn and I want to make a long, fine, thin scarf, because the yarn is pretty delicate and this way it won’t get worn-away. I can just bundle myself up in it’s softness and feel hugged. Or something. And maybe cuff warmers too, if there is enough wool left.
Actually knitting winter stuff in the spring/summer makes a sort of sense to me. It means i can pick up and put down the projects as and when i want to, and have something to look forward to wearing when the weather gets cold.

Still no news about the job - which means i didn’t get it - or the yarn, which i’m hoping will arrive tomorrow.

Dishcloths!

Obviously I have been knitting more dishcloths. Actually the colour-worked one is going to be a washcloth, for my mum as a birthday present.

And while I’m on an image posting roll here is a shot of the tarts our neighbours brought back from their holiday for us, as a thank you for watering their plants. Both the lemon and the raspberries were incredible.
(Also, i love this shot because it really shows of our Meakin plates. Originally they were my parents’ best set, and W and I have been adding to them for the last few years. I’ve had them with me since i first went to university in ‘96, and I just love them very much.)

Today I am waiting to hear back from a job i was interviewed for last week. I really want it, and i’m at that point where i’m sure it won’t be mine. it really won’t be. but i need to get a job soon, and it would have fitted me very well. i would have been useful to them.
i hate this period.
Also I am waiting for nearly 4km of yarn. Hopefully it is in the mail today and should arrive tomorrow, since it’s doesn’t even have to leave the county to get to me. As i don’t have a ball winder, i will be hand winding it for about a year - but at least that way i can spend some quality time enjoying the colours.
I will post pictures as soon as i have something to photograph.

Knitting Porn
Back in february Cast-On (my podcast of choice) included a piece about ‘Sweater Porn’. Sweater porn being, when you get so wrapped up in the knitware the actors are wearing, you stop following the plot of a film or tv show.
Last week I had my own ‘Knitting porn’ moment.
I Captured the Castle - based on the book by Dodie Smith.
A love story set in 1930s England that follows 17-year-old Cassandra
Mortmain, and the fortunes of her eccentric family, struggling to
survive in a decaying English castle.
Luckily (for the knitters) the book is much better than the film (as ever - though the film is pretty good and definately not terrible.)
So either enjoy the knitware, and read the book afterwards to find out what was going on, or read the book first, and then enjoy imagining yourself in some of the great 1930’s cardigans and jumpers.
(Here is a flickr set of the best examples from the film.)

Knitting Socks: A note to self.
Dear Self,
For. the. love. of… well all those hours you spent knitting socks for a start.
STOP putting hand knit socks into the main wash.
Turns out you can felt merino at 40C given enough agitation.
Just wash them by hand. Or bung them in with you when you have a shower, if you’re really lazy.
No love,
oscarcat
ps. your hair cut is very cute right now.

A project I’m playing with…
So, how about a knitted carpet?
Not as strange as it sounds. I mean, a carpet for our bathroom, which has a tiny floor space.
I’m thinking cotton, so that it could be regularly washed (see? practice) on relatively big needles, (aran weight maybe? - remember, i’m a 4ply kinda girl so I don’t scare easily.)
My current concern is how to attach it to the floor? I mean, it should be relatively easy to knit around the basin etc, but how to keep it in the right place? Magnets? Buttons nailed into the floor?
I will ponder further, but seriously that carpet has to go.
